HDPE Penstocks – Lightweight, Corrosion-Free Penstocks Made in the UK

An HDPE penstock is a water control gate made from high-density polyethylene instead of cast iron or steel. AQUIKO HDPE penstocks are made in the UK for drainage, flood defence and surface water schemes, with standard wall-mounted models rated up to 6 metres water column (m w.c.).

Why choose an HDPE penstock?

  • Light weight: a fraction of the weight of an iron penstock, so smaller sizes can often be fitted without lifting gear.
  • No corrosion: HDPE doesn’t rust or corrode in sewage, sea water or aggressive ground.
  • Low maintenance: no coatings to touch up and nothing to rust.
  • Little scrap value: unlike iron, HDPE penstocks aren’t a target for metal theft.

For the most aggressive environments, or where extra strength is needed, choose stainless steel 316. Read more in Why HDPE for penstocks and flap valves.

Pressure ratings

Standard wall-mounted penstocks are rated up to 6 m w.c. head pressure, and lightweight models up to 3 m w.c. Every unit comes with a fixing kit, and we supply hand wheels, spindle extensions and actuators to operate it.

HDPE penstock FAQs

Is an HDPE penstock as strong as a metal one?

For most UK drainage work, yes: standard wall-mounted HDPE penstocks are rated up to 6 m w.c. For higher pressures or aggressive sites, choose stainless steel 316.

What is the difference between an HDPE and a stainless steel penstock?

HDPE is lighter, corrosion-free and low maintenance. Stainless steel 316 is stronger and suits the most demanding or aggressive environments.

How is an HDPE penstock operated?

By turning a spindle with a hand wheel or key, or with an actuator for remote control.
